Cortisol

Jürgen Klanert PhD

Cortisol is the body's primary stress hormone, produced in the adrenal cortex. It significantly influences the sleep-wake cycle: cortisol levels peak in the morning to promote wakefulness and decrease in the evening to enable sleep – in interplay with melatonin. Chronically elevated cortisol levels due to prolonged stress can lead to sleep disorders, weight gain, and weakened immunity.
